SAXcess Story

Writer's picture: Ross HendersonRoss Henderson

The perfect example of how the orchestra works for youngsters aiming for a career in music.

Our Ben Armstrong joined Aberdeenshire Sax Orchestra as a young teenager along with dad Bruce when they both decided to learn to play saxophone. ASO was then under the musical direction of Richard Ingham.

Specialising in Baritone and under the tuition of Richard Ingham at Aberdeen University,

Ben gained his first degree in music.

Last year Ben gained a masters degree with distinction in music, majoring in saxophone performance.

He has been saxophone tutor at Chalmers MacKay music school in Inverurie for several years.

Ben is now also taking up a post as woodwind tutor with Aberdeen City Council and is also a tutor at AML music school in the city.

Of course he is true to his roots and still finds the time to play in the orchestra.

Richard having retired, the orchestra is now under the expert musical direction of Cat Evison and Mike Brogan who are also both university saxophone tutors.

Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra is proud of Ben and proud that we are able to provide this opportunity for young players
